What are the differences between an air compressor and a vacuum pump

Although air compressors and vacuum pumps both belong to the category of gas pressure processing equipment, their core functions are completely opposite. Essentially, they are two types of industrial core equipment with different uses. The core differences are as follows:

First, the core principle is contrary to the objective of the action

1. Pressure direction

Air compressor: It inputs high-pressure gas into a closed space. The intake end is atmospheric air, and the exhaust end pressure can reach 0.7 to 100MPa.

Vacuum pump: It extracts gas from a closed space to create a vacuum. The exhaust end is at normal pressure air, and the intake end pressure can be as low as below 1Pa.

2. Energy conversion

Air compressor: Energy conversion converts mechanical energy into gas pressure energy and outputs a power gas source that can be transmitted over long distances

Vacuum pump: Converts mechanical energy into negative pressure suction capacity to achieve a low-pressure environment in specific scenarios

Ii. Common Type Differences

The mainstream types of air compressors include piston type, screw type, centrifugal type and scroll type. Among them, the screw type is currently the most commonly used type in industrial scenarios

The mainstream types of vacuum pumps include mechanical dry pumps, molecular pumps, diffusion pumps, and ion pumps. Different types correspond to different vacuum degree requirements. In the semiconductor industry, a combination of dry pumps and molecular pumps is often used to achieve ultra-high vacuum

Three, the application scenarios are completely different

✅ typical scenarios of air compressors

Provide high-pressure power for various types of equipment

Factory pneumatic tools (pneumatic wrenches, spray guns), pneumatic component drives for automated production lines

Architectural spraying, tire inflation, high-pressure reaction air supply, and air source for medical pneumatic equipment

The semiconductor industry provides pure compressed air (CDA) to drive valves and automated equipment

✅ typical scenarios of vacuum pumps

Achieve a low-pressure/vacuum environment

Vacuuming of cavities for core processes such as semiconductor etching, deposition, and photolithography

Vacuum drying, vacuum distillation, vacuum packaging, vacuum furnace, low-pressure laboratory experiments

Optical lenses and electronic components are manufactured in a dust-free and low-pollution environment

Fourth, the maintenance requirements are different

Air compressor: The core maintenance points are to regularly replace the air filter and lubricating oil, and clean the cooler to prevent oil and water from contaminating the compressed air

Vacuum pump: The core maintenance points are regular replacement of mechanical seals and inspection of pipeline leaks. For dry vacuum pumps used in semiconductor scenarios, it is strictly necessary to avoid oil contamination of the vacuum environment
