The most common failure mode of oil-gas separators is not "decreased separation efficiency," but rather "the filter element collapses before the differential pressure alarm sounds." When the filter element gradually collapses inward under high differential pressure conditions, the separation layer is compressed, the filtration area decreases drastically, and the oil-gas mixture bypasses directly through the collapsed gaps. However, the compressor's differential pressure alarm is mounted on the housing and measures the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet, not the degree of collapse inside the filter element. By the time the alarm light finally illuminates, the filter element may have already collapsed for hundreds of hours, during which time the oil content in the compressed air has already exceeded the standard.

The service life under standard operating conditions can reach 3000–4000 hours.
